Eastern Cape & Garden Route

The East Coast of South Africa is known for its stunning beaches, making this seaboard one of the country’s most popular vacation areas. The Eastern Cape's Garden Route (named for its unpolished organic beauty) are home to some of South Africa’s finest stretches of coastline and natural wonders: the heads at Knysna lagoon; the crashing waves on the rocky coast of Storm’s River National Park; the dense bush and strange, colorful creatures of the Tsitsikamma Forest; the surfing paradise and stretches of enormous deserted dunes at Jeffrey’s Bay; the ancient wonders of the Cango Caves; the rumbling herds of Elephant at Addo National Park…the list goes on.

Experience the dense, rocky land at the point where Storms River and the Indian Ocean come together. Take a boat ride up the spectacular river mouth, hike some of the world's lushest trails, snorkel among the reef fish, explore the jagged shore... or just kick back in the sun.

Other Eastern Cape Oceanside Destinations:
the giant dunes and waves of Jeffrey's Bay; the bustling city of Port Elizabeth; the Southern Hemisphere's highest road bridge (and world's highest commercial bungee) at Bloukrans; and the rough seas, spectacular vistas and exciting craft market at Knysna (photo at top of page features a view of the famous Knysna lagoon).
Oudtshoorn & The Cango Caves
Ever try an ostrich steak? The city of Oudtshoorn serves them at nearly every restaurant, and many local farms even offer a chance to take a ride on the huge, flightless birds! Afterwards, stop by the nearby Cango Caves for a step back in time. The enormous caverns are home to the world’s largest natural “column,” towering from cave floor to roof, along with other ancient (we’re talking before dinosaurs) limestone artworks stretching deep into the mountain.

Retadi Guest House
Our choice accommodation in the Eastern Cape is Retadi, a charming family-owned B&B near Port Elizabeth.
Retadi Guest House is situated in the Gamtoos valley near Port Elizabeth at the start of the scenic Garden Route. Nestled in the center of a working orange plantation, the four-bedroom home is surrounded by orange groves and beautiful countryside views.

The house also includes sitting and dining areas, a full kitchen with breakfast table, an outdoor grill and sitting area, wrap-around porch with seating, en suite bathrooms, and - our favorite - a large tub resting beneath a candlelit chandelier. Retadi sleeps up to nine people. (Nearby bed and breakfasts are available for larger groups.)

Central to many Eastern Cape adventures, Retadi is also nearby the exciting Addo Elephant National Park.
